Stump Grinding - Professional Tree Service

Stump Grinding

There are two ways to remove a stump: physical removal with heavy equipment, such as a backhoe, or grinding it down below the surface of the ground.   Only large commercial developments generally opt for the first method, while most homeowners and businesses choose the second as it does minimal damage to the surround area.

Grinding a stump can be a messy and dirty undertaking, however at Green Bay Tree Service we pride ourselves in maintaining a clean process and leave the area as pristine as possible.  The stump grinding process is simply a matter of bringing one of our Morbark grinders on to the property and positioning it over the stump.  This is the one case where heavy equipment will be required on to your property.  However with our Morbark grinders, the track left by the machine is virtually invisible after a few days; and the impact to the surrounding landscape is virtually zero.

Stumps vary in their difficulty to grind. Newer hardwoods are the hardest while older conifers, such as Pines and Cedars, are the easiest.  Age matters in this case, however regardless of the age or even species of the tree, Green Bay Tree Service can easily remove it with our state-of-the-art grinders.  There is also the consideration of the roots system.  That is, if they run deep or shallow.  If shallow, then there is a bit more work to do vs. if they run deep.  But again, regardless of the root system, we can easily grind them to non-existence in your landscape.

How We Grind a Stump

We use a five-step process when grinding all stumps:
  • With use of a rake and shovel, we clear the area of rock, gravel and as much dirt as possible
  • We use a chainsaw to cut the stump as low to the ground as possible.   This will reduce the amount of stump that needs to be grinded, and reduce the level of wood chips and dust to deal with
  • Move the stump grinder in place, over the stump to within three to six inches and then lower the cutting blades into the stump approximately three inches.  We then move the grinding blades back and forth grinding the entire circumference of the stump down
  • We continue this process until the stump is ground to three to six inches below the ground
  • Lastly, we clean the entire area of wood chips, and then can optionally replant grass seed or sod – this repairs the area as if a tree and stump were never there

The entire process can take 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the age, size, and species of the tree.  The grinding process can, and often does, leave a considerable amount of wood chips on the ground.  We take the careful time and effort to complete clean the area, recycling the wood chips.

We offer multi-stump discounts where applicable and also offer discounts if our customer purchase multiple services from us, such a tree removal and stump grinding.  Please call Green Bay Tree Service if you need one or more stump ground.
